Oxydendrum

This beautiful, deciduous tree is native to North America. O. arboreum, commonly known as the Sorrel Tree or Sourwood, is a small, slow growing tree that ultimately reaches a height of only 25 feet. The Sorrel Tree is covered with tough, shiny dark green leaves that open with a reddish hue in the spring. The oblong lance-shaped leaves are alternately arranged on the branches and grow from 4 to 7 inches long and 11/2 to 21/2 inches wide. In autumn, the foliage turns vivid shades of red and orange. In mid-summer, 6- to 8-inch, pendant clusters of small, fragrant, white flowers are produced at the ends of the branches. These flowers look very much like Lilies-of-the-Valley and some people call this a Lily-of-the-Valley Tree, though that isn't what it is. Following the flowers are erect clusters of grayish seedpods.

Pot Cultivation

Grow Sorrel Trees in moist, acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.5) soil that has been enhanced with leaf mold or peat moss. They will grow in light shade, but to produce the most blossoms and brilliant autumn colors, grow in full sun. Pruning is rarely required.
